2 5 Increasing attention is being given in the design of new engines to ensure that the noise level is acceptable and that the results of manufacturers' own research work and that of organisations such as (in the UK) the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, at Southampton University, are used. Alternative approaches are to clad engines in acoustic material, as was applied by the Ministry of Defence (Navy) on the Deltic engine, or to put the engines in sound-proofed enclosures. Apart from engine noise, attention has also to be given to the silencing of the air intakes, exhaust, and the turbocharger.

Derating. With a naturally aspirated engine the full power capability at maximum speed is virtually directly proportional to the inlet air density; consequently the power has to be reduced as ambient density varies from the standard, due to reduction in pressure with altitude or increase in air temperature, or both. On an engine fitted with a turbocharger the power reduction with altitude is less, as the turbocharger self-compensates to some extent by increasing automatically in speed as altitude increases.
